Seven score and nine years ago, President Abraham Lincoln signed into legislation and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, an act aimed at abolishing slavery in the United States.
But before that, Lincoln abolished something else.
Check out the vampire-hunting awesomeness that just may be Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter in the first official trailer below:
From the director of Wanted (2008; starring Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, and James McAvoy) comes the tale of a man on the hunt for vampires after his mother is slain by one of the supernatural creatures.
And that man is – yep, you guessed it – Mr. Lincoln himself.
2012 will see the released of two films centered around Honest Abe: Lincoln, the Steven Spielberg-directed biopic on the late president’s life, aimed at those of us who care about history; and Vampire Hunter, the Timur Bekmambetov-directed action flick about vampire slaying, for those of us who could give two wits about receiving another history lesson on Lanky Lincoln.
The trailer release makes sense, given that President Lincoln’s birthday was yesterday (Feb. 12). As a birthday gift, CBS News aired the first bits of footage of this film. And today we get a trailer!
Apparently, the proper way to commemorate a president’s birthday is to release a video of a depiction of him killing vampires with an ax. We’ll have to keep that in mind when Mr. Obama’s birthday rolls around on August 4.
The first trailer does an excellent job of not revealing much, although I really don’t know how much story can be revealed. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter appears to be an action-packed blockbuster, due out on June 22, geared more towards those who want mindless entertainment than those who want thought-provoking art. And that’s just fine with me.
As an aside, did anyone involved with the production consider having Robert Pattinson and the Twilight gang make cameos, in which Honest Abe could lop off their limbs with an ax or a hacksaw? Sorry, Twi-hards, but that is one movie cameo I would pay lots of money to see.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter looks to be one of the more interesting blockbusters due out this summer. It boasts a cast full of relative unknowns: Benjamin Walker as Abraham Lincoln, Dominic Cooper as Henry Sturgess, Rufus Sewell as Adam (who?), and John Rothman as Confederate President Jefferson Davis; the only really well-known cast member is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays Mary Todd Lincoln, and even she isn’t really a household name. Alan Tudyk (Stephen A. Douglas) is somewhat famous, too.
Director Timur Bekmambetov is also an essentially unproven director, with just the one popular credit to his name: Wanted.
It will be interesting to see just what exactly will be made of this film, but look for more information and news to come. If the trailer is any indication, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter could be one of the surprise hits of summer 2012.
